OpenAI took a major step on March 19, 2026, confirming a Wall Street Journal report: it is combining the ChatGPT desktop application, the Codex coding platform, and the Atlas AI browser into a single “desktop superapp.” This move aims to simplify the user experience, eliminate product fragmentation, and use the company’s resources more efficiently. Why a Superapp?

In an internal memo to employees, OpenAI Applications CEO Fidji Simo stated:

“We realized we were spread across too many applications and technologies, and we understood that we needed to simplify our efforts. This fragmentation was slowing us down and making it difficult to reach the desired level of quality.”

Simo also added in a post on X

“Companies go through discovery and focus phases; both are critical. But when new bets start to pay off (as we saw with Codex), it’s crucial to focus on them and avoid distractions. We are happy to have seized this moment.”

The company has recently launched several new projects, including the Sora video app, a collaboration with Jony Ive, and the Codex desktop app. However, in this period of increased competition (especially Anthropic's integration of Claude Code and Cowork), it is opting to abandon "side projects" and focus on core productivity tools.

Leadership and Organizational Changes
- OpenAI President Greg Brockman will temporarily oversee the product refresh and related organizational changes.

- Fidji Simo will lead the sales and marketing team for the new super app.

This structure aligns with the company's IPO preparations and aggressive growth strategy targeting enterprise clients. The mobile ChatGPT app will not be affected by this change.

What Does This Mean for Users?
A single desktop window will offer chat (ChatGPT), coding (Codex), and AI-powered web browsing (Atlas). Users will be able to complete productivity tasks without switching between applications. This will be a great convenience, especially for developers, researchers, and enterprise users. OpenAI's goal is to rival Anthropic's similar integrated desktop experience and retain users within its own ecosystem.

Competition and the Future
Anthropic's Claude-based desktop application (chat + code + productivity tools) is already on the market. With this move, OpenAI is adopting an "all-in-one" approach and aims to build momentum after Codex's successful launch in February 2026. According to analysts, this is a sign that OpenAI is aiming for an AI productivity superapp similar to Microsoft Office or Google Workspace in the long term.

#OpenAIPlansDesktopSuperApp is concrete evidence of OpenAI's shift from "exploration" to "focus." A detailed launch date has not yet been announced, but with the company's official confirmation, the development process has accelerated. A smoother, higher-quality, and more integrated AI experience for users and developers will soon be available on the desktop.

We will closely follow developments. This strategic move by OpenAI provides important clues about how AI tools will shape up in 2026.
