According to IT House citing foreign technology media The Information, OpenAI is currently developing a new open source model code-named “G3PO” internally in order to counter Llama 2, an open source model jointly developed by Microsoft and Meta, and it is unclear when it will be released.
Netizens in the Reddit community believe that there are two reasons why OpenAI delayed the release of the open source model: the OpenAI team is relatively small and focuses on promoting the application store to provide customers with a market for selling custom AI models. This helps OpenAI build a moat; OpenAI also hopes to create a personalized ChatGPT assistant. Launching a true “spin-off” to compete directly with Microsoft is an effort “likely to take years,” the source said.
