Odaily Planet Daily News: Due to widespread protests within Iran and the rial exchange rate hitting historic lows, the Iranian government implemented a nationwide internet blackout today, causing trading disruptions for approximately 7 million cryptocurrency users.
TRM Labs data shows that during January to July 2025, the total cryptocurrency flow within Iran was approximately $3.7 billion. Under the current internet blackout conditions, Bitwise CEO Hunter Horsley recommends using bitcoin as a wealth storage method. Currently viable offline transaction solutions include: Starlink satellite internet has been activated within the country and can provide high-speed connectivity; Blockstream satellite network supports broadcasting bitcoin data globally.
Additionally, Bitchat, a decentralized communication service based on Bluetooth mesh networks, has exceeded 1.4 million downloads since its release and supports transmitting transaction data between mobile phones. The Darkwire project developed by Cyb3r17 utilizes long-distance wireless technology to create mesh networks and can transmit bitcoin transactions in offline environments. Machankura, developed by South African developer Kgothatso Ngako, allows users to send and receive bitcoin through telecommunications networks rather than the internet. These offline solutions ultimately still require connected devices to upload transactions to the blockchain for confirmation.
