(MENAFN) Canada’s Foreign Minister Anita Anand said Tuesday that she has requested permission from Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi to use Oman’s airspace if evacuation of Canadians becomes necessary.

“Our top priority right now is the 100,000 Canadians that are in the region,” Anand stated during an event at the Toronto Board of Trade. She added that she is in contact with officials across Gulf and Middle Eastern countries to ensure that Canadians have access to necessary support.

Tensions in the region have escalated since the US and Israel launched a large-scale attack on Iran on Saturday, which killed nearly 800 people, including Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. In response, Iran has carried out drone and missile strikes targeting Israel and Gulf countries hosting US military assets.
