Abstract generation in progress

On December 31, 2025, a major milestone in China’s energy infrastructure was achieved when the nation’s largest all-vanadium flow battery facility commenced full-scale operations. This advanced energy storage system, developed by China Three Gorges Corporation, represents a significant leap forward in the deployment of large-scale, long-duration battery technologies designed to stabilize China’s increasingly complex power grid.

Revolutionary Capacity in Xinjiang’s Energy Infrastructure

Located in Jimusaer County, Changji Prefecture in the Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the vanadium battery power station boasts impressive technical specifications. With a rated capacity of 200,000 kilowatts and total energy storage reaching 1 million kilowatt-hours, it stands as China’s most powerful all-vanadium flow battery installation to date. The facility’s engineering design addresses one of the renewable energy sector’s fundamental challenges: the intermittency problem that plagues solar and wind power generation.

Boosting Clean Energy Integration and Grid Stability

The vanadium battery system functions as a sophisticated energy arbitrage tool, capturing excess solar electricity during high-generation periods when photovoltaic panels operate at peak efficiency. Rather than allowing this surplus power to dissipate, the facility stores it for discharge during nighttime hours or periods of peak electricity demand. Engineering projections indicate the system will enhance the associated photovoltaic power station’s utilization rate by more than 10 percent annually, translating to an additional 230 million kilowatt-hours of clean electricity delivered to the grid each year. This integration demonstrates how advanced vanadium battery technology can unlock the true potential of renewable energy infrastructure while simultaneously strengthening grid reliability.
