The European Commission announces a new round of sanctions against Russia

European Commission President von der Leyen announced on February 6th local time that the European Commission has proposed the 20th round of sanctions against Russia. The new sanctions cover energy, financial services, and trade sectors. The statement said that the EU proposed a comprehensive maritime services ban on Russian crude oil and suggested coordinating the implementation of this ban with allies after a decision by the G7. The new sanctions will add 43 oil tankers to the “shadow fleet” list, bringing the total to 640 vessels. Additionally, it will increase the difficulty for Russia to acquire oil tankers used for the “shadow fleet” and fully ban maintenance and other services for its liquefied natural gas carriers and icebreakers. The sanctions list will also include 20 Russian regional banks, and measures will be taken against companies and platforms involved in cryptocurrency transactions. The statement also mentioned the first-time use of anti-avoidance tools and proposed strengthening legal protections for EU businesses. (CCTV News)
