#IranProposesHormuzStraitReopeningTerms
Crisis Context
Following the February 2026 US-Israeli strikes and the subsequent death of Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Iran effectively shuttered the Strait of Hormuz, a vital artery for 20% of global oil. This "chokehold" has crippled global energy markets, driving Brent crude to approximately $108 per barrel.
The Proposal
On April 27, 2026, Iranian officials, mediated by Pakistan, proposed terms for reopening the waterway:
Immediate Sanctions Relief: Iran demands the U.S. lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports.
Decoupled Negotiations: Tehran seeks to reopen shipping and end the current war without simultaneously addressing its nuclear program, proposing nuclear talks be delayed to a "later phase."
Toll Mechanism: Iran is lobbying regional neighbors like Oman to support a permanent tolling system for vessels.
Strategic Stalemate
President Donald Trump characterized the offer as "much better" but remains firm that any permanent deal must include the total dismantling of Iran's nuclear stockpile. While Iran uses the Strait as its primary leverage, the U.S. maintains a "maximum pressure" blockade, leading to a high-stakes diplomatic standoff in Islamabad.
