Recently, I’ve been doing some account testing and found that temporary phone number services are truly a necessity. Registering for overseas websites, verifying SMS interfaces—buying a new SIM card is just too wasteful, so I started researching SMS reception platforms. Honestly, I’ve encountered quite a few pitfalls: some platforms simply don’t receive verification codes at all, others have delays of a minute or two. After some trial and error, I’ve summarized a few decent options.

In simple terms, SMS reception platforms provide virtual numbers to receive verification codes, with pay-per-use or monthly subscription models. I mainly use them to test interfaces and register some infrequently used accounts, which helps avoid exposing my real number and prevents spam.

The most reliable ones I’ve tested are these: SMS-Activate, which generally delivers codes within 10 seconds and covers a wide range of countries; 5SIM, with clear API documentation, works well for testing Google, Twitter, and more; Super Cloud SMS offers US number ranges that are quite fast, though sometimes slow during peak times; Bird SMS is friendly for domestic applications, usually receiving codes within 5-15 seconds; Getsmscode is inexpensive and suitable for light usage.

When using SMS reception services, keep in mind that some numbers are shared and may have been registered before, so verification codes for less common platforms might be delayed. It’s advisable to prepare several numbers as backups so you can switch quickly if one becomes invalid. If you’re just testing interfaces, you can pick any platform that supports API integration, but for stable registration on specific websites, it’s better to buy multiple numbers. Also, some platforms support one-click number switching, which is quite handy.

Overall, SMS-Activate and 5SIM perform the best, with low latency and broad coverage. If you need a platform for testing, these two are worth trying first.
