Recently, while following Bitcoin-related news, I was reminded of how much Michael Saylor's strategy has influenced the market. This individual is not just a Bitcoin supporter; he is an entrepreneur who has fundamentally changed the behavior of institutional investors.
Michael Saylor, co-founder and Chairman of MicroStrategy, made a bold decision in 2020 to incorporate Bitcoin as a "digital gold" into the company's treasury reserves. At the time, many people probably thought it was madness. But his perspective was different. He argued that Bitcoin is a better hedge against inflation than gold or traditional stores of value, and he took concrete action accordingly.
In August 2020, MicroStrategy executed its first Bitcoin purchase for $250 million. Since then, the company has continued to buy more. Currently, it holds over 330k Bitcoins, accounting for more than 1.4% of the total BTC supply. What’s astonishing is how they financed this massive investment.
The most distinctive aspect of Saylor’s approach is his debt strategy utilizing convertible bonds. Instead of simply buying with cash, he issued promissory notes that investors could exchange for cash or MSTR shares, raising billions of dollars. By October 2024, the company plans to raise $42 billion over three years to fund Bitcoin purchases. In November, they issued $2.6 billion in convertible bonds. While this strategy may seem risky at first glance, Saylor is convinced that Bitcoin’s rarity makes the risk worth taking.
His influence extends beyond corporate strategy. Saylor’s candid stance and track record have prompted other major companies like Tesla and Square to invest in Bitcoin. In other words, he has shifted the entire institutional investor behavior pattern. MicroStrategy’s large-scale acquisitions have directly impacted market prices and helped establish Bitcoin’s legitimacy as a corporate asset rather than just a speculative instrument.
As of November 2024, Michael Saylor’s net worth exceeds $11 billion, and MicroStrategy’s stock price has increased by over 450%. This demonstrates how profoundly his Bitcoin strategy has altered market valuation.
Holding degrees in aeronautics and space science from MIT, his thinking is always long-term and systematic. He views Bitcoin not just as a business strategy but as a belief in a decentralized financial system. As cryptocurrencies become more mainstream in finance, Michael Saylor is expected to continue playing a leading role in this field. His next moves are currently key indicators of the overall market direction.
