Japan to Support Malaysia's Rare Earth Refining with ODA

The Japanese government will begin providing technical support related to rare earth mining to Malaysia. The plan includes supplying geological exploration equipment through Official Development Assistance (ODA) projects and promoting environmentally conscious rare earth refining technology cooperation. This initiative aims to help Malaysia, which has abundant rare earth reserves, establish a production foundation and diversify its rare earth procurement channels.

This is the first time Japan and Malaysia are collaborating on rare earth mining technology through ODA. The Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has dispatched experts in resource geology, environmental chemistry, and other fields to Malaysia in February to promote the project launch.

Currently, technical personnel from both Japan and Malaysia are communicating and coordinating on project objectives. The Japanese side also plans to invite about 10 technical staff in mineral processing and related fields from Malaysia to Japan for training.

Nikkei Inc. and the Financial Times merged in November 2015 to form the same media group.
