Rio Tinto Advances Major Desalination Initiative with Western Australian Government Partnership
Rio Tinto has entered a significant 50:50 joint venture with the Western Australian Government to develop and operate the Dampier Seawater Desalination Plant, marking an important milestone in the region’s water security strategy. This partnership combines Rio Tinto’s operational expertise with government support to address critical freshwater demands in Western Australia’s remote mining regions.
8 Gigaliters Annual Capacity to Strengthen Regional Water Supply
The fully operational desalination facility will deliver 8 gigaliters of freshwater annually to the West Pilbara Water Supply Scheme, effectively doubling the region’s water availability. This substantial capacity increase addresses the growing water demands from mining operations and local communities across the Pilbara, one of Australia’s most resource-rich but water-constrained regions. The project demonstrates how industrial partnerships can tackle infrastructure challenges while supporting regional development.
Two-Stage Construction Progressing on Schedule
The project is being rolled out in two distinct phases. Stage 1 construction is already underway, with the facility expected to begin producing 4 gigaliters of desalinated water annually during 2026. The second phase, which adds another 4 gigaliters of capacity, commenced construction recently and is targeted for completion in 2027, enabling the plant to reach its full 8-gigaliter annual output. This phased approach allows the region to benefit from increased water supply while the facility is being scaled up.
Resource Companies Lead Infrastructure Development
Rio Tinto’s commitment to this desalination project signals a broader trend where major mining corporations are taking ownership of critical infrastructure projects. Beyond extracting resources, companies are increasingly investing in sustainable water management, renewable energy integration, and regional development initiatives. The Dampier facility exemplifies how desalination technology can support both industrial operations and community needs, creating long-term value for stakeholders across Western Australia’s resource sector.
