₴ The hryvnia has been the official currency of Ukraine since 1996, when it replaced the previous currency – the Ukrainian karbovanets. The symbol ₴ represents this national currency worldwide. Each hryvnia is divided into 100 kopiyok, and the denominations in circulation are: 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, and 500 hryvnias. The name of the currency refers to an ancient unit of weight used in medieval Kievan Rus, thus connecting modern Ukraine with its rich history. The symbol ₴ is widely recognized in international financial transactions.
