Canadian Tire Corp. Limited announced Thursday that it has appointed Greg Hicks to the position of President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. This appointment marks a significant transition in the company’s leadership, with Greg Hicks succeeding Stephen Wetmore in the executive role and joining the Board of Directors.

Greg Hicks Brings Extensive Retail Experience

Prior to his promotion, Greg Hicks served as President of Canadian Tire Retail (CTR), the company’s primary business division generating over $9 billion in annual revenue. With more than 20 years of senior retail leadership experience and seven years with Canadian Tire, Hicks has demonstrated strong operational capabilities. During his tenure at CTR, he managed all business operations and played a crucial role in developing the company’s Owned Brands portfolio, which has grown into a multi-billion-dollar revenue stream. Before leading CTR, Hicks held the position of Group Senior Vice-President overseeing Consumer Products and Retail Experience.

Strategic Leadership Transition

The selection of Greg Hicks followed a comprehensive international recruitment process, during which the Board’s Search Committee evaluated numerous qualified candidates from both inside and outside the organization. According to Maureen Sabia, Chairman of Canadian Tire Corp., the evaluation focused on aligning candidates’ qualifications with the company’s strategic priorities and leadership requirements. “The appointment of Greg Hicks reflects our confidence in his ability to lead the organization forward,” Sabia stated.

Supporting a Smooth Transition

Stephen Wetmore, who had served on the Board since 2003, is transitioning from his CEO role and stepping down from the Board. However, to ensure continuity and a seamless handover, Wetmore will remain engaged with the company as an Honorary Director and strategic advisor through the end of 2020. This arrangement allows Wetmore to support Greg Hicks during the transition period while maintaining operational stability.
