Abstract generation in progress

The World Health Organization announced a significant milestone in humanitarian assistance: an initial group of five patients was relocated from Gaza to Egypt through the Rafah crossing. The passage connecting the two territories was reopened, allowing for the first time the transfer of people in urgent need of medical care. Accompanied by seven healthcare professionals, these patients began their journey to Egypt in search of specialized treatment.

Reopening of Passage Enables Flow to Egypt

The importance of reopening the Rafah crossing goes beyond the initial numbers. This passage represents a critical route for relocating patients to Egypt, where hospital facilities are prepared to receive those who cannot be treated locally. According to RTHK, the corridor was reactivated yesterday, allowing the five initial patients to begin their journey. The reactivation of this passage is essential for the continuation of medical transfer operations.

More Than 18,000 Patients Remain on Waiting List

The challenging reality is that only five patients have been relocated, while more than 18,500 are waiting for their turn to be transferred to Egypt. These patients suffer from injuries caused by conflicts, as well as chronic conditions such as cancer and diabetes. The waiting list highlights the magnitude of the humanitarian crisis and the urgency of transfer operations. Gaza health authorities are currently establishing priority criteria to determine who will be relocated next.

Children Among the Most Vulnerable Waiting for Transfer

A particular concern is about children awaiting treatment opportunities. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) emphasized that more than 3,000 of these patients waiting for transfer to Egypt are minors. This population is among the most vulnerable, making their transfers especially urgent. Arriving in Egypt could mean access to treatments that will save lives in this critical age group.
