Tether, the issuer of the USDT stablecoin, purchases 27 tons of gold in Q4 2025

Tether (Tether), the issuer of the world's largest stablecoin USDT, announced that it bought approximately 27 metric tons of gold for its fund during the last quarter of 2025, a level close to its Q3 purchases, which analysts estimated at around 26 tons.

This comes as gold continues its strong rally, having increased by about 18% since the beginning of the year, along with gains of 64% throughout 2025, pushing it through key psychological levels at $3,000 per ounce in March, then $4,000 in October, and recently reaching $5,000 per ounce, driven by strong demand from investors, central banks, and individuals amid rising global tensions.

As a result, cryptocurrency companies, led by Tether, have become an important source of demand for gold, amid the rapid pace of reserve purchases supporting the USDT, which accounts for nearly $187 billion of circulating tokens, along with Tether Gold (XAUT), backed by gold, with a market value of about $2.7 billion.

XAUT is the largest gold-backed stablecoin in the market, representing approximately 60% of the total supply of such coins, giving Tether a clear dominance in issuance and trading in this sector.

Paolo Ardino, CEO of Tether, said: "We are now operating on a scale that places the Tether Gold Investment Fund alongside major sovereign gold holders, which carries real responsibility."
