Ethereum mainnet transfer fee drops below L2: $0.0017 hits a new low

Abstract generation in progress

[Crypto World] On December 5th, I noticed an interesting phenomenon: Ethereum mainnet transfers are now cheaper than several major L2s.

Actual test data is quite counterintuitive—a transfer on the mainnet only costs $0.0017, while L2 networks like Base, Arbitrum, and Optimism cost $0.0055 to $0.0079, which is 3 to 5 times more expensive. As of now, Ethereum mainnet’s gas fee is only 0.031 gwei.

This actually reflects a cooling off in mainnet activity. The original purpose of L2s was to solve the mainnet’s high cost and slowness, but now the mainnet itself has “lowered prices” first, which is a bit awkward. Of course, this is good news for users—at least in the short term, using the mainnet directly has become the most economical choice.

It's true that mainnet activity has cooled down, but this wave of L2s getting countered is also pretty wild. It feels like the Ethereum ecosystem narrative needs to be restructured.

Haha, mainnet fees counterattacking L2? This is the Ethereum I know—changes its attitude faster than flipping a page.

Damn, this is what it looks like when the supply and demand curve fails. The mainnet is grabbing all the L2’s business for itself—it’s literally a textbook example of industry involution. --- L2s: We exist to lower fees | Mainnet: Sorry, I can make it dirt cheap myself --- So how will users choose now? It’s still all about ROI, of course. 0.0017 vs 0.0079—the price gap is right there, forget about any theoretical advantages, money talks. --- Honestly, this is the perfect embodiment of bear market philosophy—all those flashy, innovative solutions get slapped back to square one by reality. --- Wait, activity cooling down actually brought fees down? I think I’ve seen this logic in some economics book before, what was it called… Oh right, Keynes talked about it. --- Damn, I have to change my trading strategy again. This is just too ironic.

Is the mainnet doing reverse proxy here? LOL, the L2s must be dying of embarrassment.

Ha, this is awkward for L2. The mainnet is lowering prices and selling directly.

Mainnet counterattacks L2? This guy makes an interesting point, feels like L2s are in an awkward spot now. --- Wait, is mainnet activity really dropping? These numbers are wild. --- A $0.0017 transfer fee, that’s something I never even dreamed of. --- Is L2 just giving it away? Mainnet is insanely cheap right now. --- Something’s off, how did mainnet suddenly get this cost-effective? --- Gotta jump on this mainnet opportunity and farm as much as possible. --- Activity drops but fees plummet even more, it’s kind of ironic. --- The Base folks are probably just as confused, haha.
