The term of Fed Chairman Jerome Powell will end in May of next year. However, who will be the head of the institution will be known much earlier. The process regarding who the new chairman of the Fed will be is being managed by U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. Bessent has repeatedly stated that he is not interested in the chairmanship, despite his name being mentioned.
On the other hand, according to the Wall Street Journal's report, Trump currently has three names in mind. These are; White House Economic Advisor Kevin Hassett, Fed member and interest rate cut advocate Christopher Waller, and former Fed governor Kevin Warsh.
“Trump is still very angry”
In a report by Fed correspondent Nick Timiraos, known for his insider information, it was noted that Waller's chances are low. It was stated that Trump is still very angry with former Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin over the Jerome Powell election and does not want someone from within the institution. Therefore, although he is among the candidates, Waller is given a low probability of taking the presidential seat.
However, Waller has recently entered the list due to his comments suggesting that interest rate cuts are needed and his statements about the job market being much worse than it appears during the summer months…
According to Timiraos, Waller was viewed as a “marginal person” because of his comments, but time proved him right. Labor market revisions clearly demonstrated the accuracy of Waller's words.
It could also be Miran
On the other hand, it is expected that Stephen Miran will take the vacant seat following Adriana Kugler's resignation. Miran, who was the Chairman of the Economic Advisers Council (CEA) during the Trump administration, is also claimed to potentially become the Fed chairman later.
The date for the announcement of the new Fed chairman is not definitively known, but experts are pointing to the months of October and November.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has a list of 11 candidates, and discussions with the candidates are ongoing.
