The perpetrators cut off his fingers and extorted bitcoin worth 11.5 million dollars. After the incident, police took swift action, rescuing Balland and his partner, and arrested 10 suspects at the scene, though one suspect escaped to Spain during the chaos. Following weeks of joint pursuit by French and Spanish police, the suspect was finally apprehended in Benalmádena, Spain.
