German Government Watchdog Initiates Worldcoin Probe: Report Reveals Investigation Launched in November 2022

CryptoNewsFlash

The Bavarian State Office for Data Protection Supervision, also known as BayLDA, has allegedly initiated an inquiry into the Worldcoin project, which involves verifying human identities through biometric data. As per a report from Reuters on July 31, the German data protection authority commenced the investigation in November 2022

Worldcoin, which was introduced just last week with the aim of establishing a novel “identity and financial network,” has already amassed a significant user base of 2.1 million sign-ups, primarily during a two-year trial phase. The sign-up procedure involves a gleaming spherical “orb” that scans faces in various locations, including France, Germany, and Spain.

The president of the German regulatory body, Michael Will, has raised concerns about the project’s utilization of cutting-edge technology to process sensitive data on a large scale. Privacy campaigners and authorities have raised questions about the appropriateness of using these technologies for transmitting financial information and whether users have given explicit consent based on clear and sufficient information.

On its website, Worldcoin characterizes its network as “privacy-preserving” and claims to store personal data in an encrypted format securely. The Worldcoin Foundation, based in the Cayman Islands, has openly asserted its adherence to European Union regulations and committed to collaborating with regulatory authorities concerning privacy and data protection protocols.

Concerns over Biometric Data Collection

Nevertheless, privacy advocates have expressed worries about the extensive gathering and retention of biometric data, fearing it could lead to heightened surveillance or targeted measures against particular demographic segments.

Additionally, various European regulatory bodies have taken an interest in Worldcoin. France’s data protection authority has remarked that the legality of Worldcoin’s data collection practices appears to be “doubtful,” the UK’s data regulator has announced intentions to investigate the project.

The Bavarian state regulator is conducting the investigation because a German subsidiary of Tools For Humanity, the company behind Worldcoin, operates in the area.

The Worldcoin initiative introduces a unique method for identity verification and financial networking, but it has undeniably sparked substantial legal and ethical inquiries. As the investigation progresses and other authorities show interest, the cryptocurrency community and privacy advocates will closely monitor how they tackle these issues.

However, Worldcoin encounters not only scrutiny in Germany but also other challenges.

Legal and Privacy Concerns Arise

Starting in April 2023, Worldcoin underwent extensive security audits by Nethermind and Least Authority. These audits covered various aspects, including the accuracy of implementation, secure key storage, resilience against attacks, and data privacy. The audits identified 26 items, and the team addressed and fixed 24 of them, mitigated and acknowledged one.

Despite these efforts to enhance security and privacy, the project encountered immediate criticism upon the launch of its coin WLD on July 25, 2023. French and UK authorities raised doubts about the legality of Worldcoin. They expressed interest in investigating potential violations of data protection laws, adding to the mounting concerns surrounding this ambitious initiative.
