On the Effectiveness of Transformation: Discussing Heroes (Today’s Talk)

Geng Lei, People’s Daily (April 2, 2026, Page 01)

Patents lying in laboratories are just castles in the air. Recently, over 1.35M existing patents from more than 2,700 universities and research institutions nationwide have been inventoried for the first time, with 680k invention patents selected for precise matching with 46,000 enterprises. Focusing on the “heroes” of transformation effectiveness highlights the shift in patent development from emphasizing quantity to prioritizing quality and implementation.

What does it take to accelerate turning patent assets into industrial dividends?

Reform facilitates the process. Promoting reform to empower technological achievements in official positions, some universities have established dedicated agencies to assist patent results in equity participation; cultivating a team of technical managers, some regions strengthen on-site services, departmental collaboration, and park-based support to promote local technological innovation and transformation. With targeted reform and precise policies, good patents can be “born” faster, and good technologies can be accelerated to “land.”

Lengthening the “1” and advancing it. The innovative development of the “Six Little Dragons” in Hangzhou benefits from Zhejiang’s “Golden Seed” plan for patent industrialization of small and medium-sized enterprises; some regions focus on key technologies like power batteries, cultivating and creating patent-intensive products, and promoting the renewal of the new energy vehicle industry… Streamlining the entire chain from patents to industry will continue to open new fields and new tracks.

As more technological innovations target real-world problems and research results are integrated into scenarios, the driving force for developing new quality productivity will become even more vigorous.
