Former Vice Mayor of Chongqing and former Chairman of the Shanxi Provincial CPPCC, Wu Cunrong, involved in accepting bribes of over 127 million RMB, was publicly sentenced in the first instance by the Beijing Second Intermediate People’s Court, receiving life imprisonment.

The trial found that from 2006 to 2024, Wu Cunrong used his official position to assist others in project planning and approval, land use changes, and business operations, accepting money illegally either directly or through others.

The court believes that Wu Cunrong’s bribery amount was particularly large and should be punished according to law. Due to the attempted nature of his bribery crimes, his voluntary confession of most of the bribe facts not yet known to authorities, his remorse, active restitution, and other circumstances that warrant leniency, he may be given a lighter sentence according to law.

Public information shows that Wu Cunrong, born in May 1963, is from Wuwei, Anhui Province. He has served as Deputy Secretary and Mayor of Hefei City, Standing Committee Member of the Anhui Provincial Party Committee, Secretary of Hefei Municipal Party Committee, Standing Committee Member and Vice Governor of Anhui Province, Standing Committee Member and Vice Mayor of Chongqing, Deputy Secretary of the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee, Deputy Director of the Chongqing Municipal People’s Congress Standing Committee, and Secretary and Chairman of the Party Group of the Shanxi Provincial CPPCC.
