Drawing a Line with Intel: Apple's 2026 Studio Display Will Only Be Compatible with Apple Silicon Macs
Apple announced the new Studio Display series monitors last night, designed to perfectly match Mac, with a starting price of $1,199.
However, if you are still using a Mac with an Intel chip, the newly released Studio Display and Studio Display XDR are likely incompatible with your device.
According to the compatibility list published on Apple’s official website, neither the standard Studio Display nor the high-end Studio Display XDR supports any Mac models based on Intel processors.
Apple clearly states that the list of Macs compatible with these two monitors dates back to 2020, but all supported models are equipped with M-series chips. The full compatibility list is as follows:
Since releasing the first Apple Silicon-powered devices in 2020, Apple has gradually phased out Intel. The MacBook Air completed the transition in 2020, the MacBook Pro series fully shifted to Apple Silicon in 2021, and other Mac lines followed suit. The last Intel-based Mac was the Mac Pro, which was discontinued in 2023. To date, Apple has not sold any Intel-based Macs for nearly three years.
With the long-term discontinuation of Intel Macs, Apple is also gradually tightening support. According to previous reports, macOS Tahoe will be the last major system update available for Intel Macs, and subsequent versions like macOS 27 will no longer support these models. However, Apple has promised that after macOS Tahoe, Intel Macs will still receive security updates for three more years.
