Does AI · Micron’s expansion of the Tongluo wafer plant target the surge in AI chip demand?

IT Home, March 16 — Micro, based in the United States, announced on the 15th local time that it has completed the transfer of the P5 wafer plant in Miaoli County’s Tongluo Science Park with Powerchip. The company also stated plans to build a second phase on the existing first phase of the plant.

Powerchip’s Tongluo P5 wafer plant has approximately 300,000 square feet (about 27,871 square meters) of cleanroom space for 12-inch wafer production lines. The announced second phase will add another 270,000 square feet (about 25,084 square meters) of cleanroom space, with construction scheduled to begin by the end of fiscal year 2026 (by late August 2026).

Micron said that the Tongluo wafer plant will serve as an extension of its Taichung manufacturing base, which is only about 15 miles apart (IT Home note: approximately 24.1 kilometers). The new wafer plant will support Micron’s expansion of advanced DRAM products, including HBM, to meet the growing demand driven by AI.
