SAP Chief Executive Officer Says Defense Industry Is Company's Fastest-Growing Business
Investing.com – SAP CEO Christian Klein said that with the increase in global military budgets, the defense industry has become the company’s fastest-growing business line.
Klein stated in an interview this week that there is high demand in the market for better software and artificial intelligence to expand defense operations. He confirmed that about 10% of the company’s revenue comes from the defense sector.
The Iran war is the latest major conflict driving a significant increase in military spending. After Russia’s invasion of Ukraine in 2022, European defense budgets also saw growth. Klein said that with hundreds of billions of dollars flowing into the industry to increase weapon stockpiles and readiness, militaries worldwide are interested in upgrading software systems.
SAP is migrating the German armed forces’ systems to newer SAP programs that will handle logistics, personnel management, and administrative processes. Although parts of the project have been delayed due to software errors, Klein said the company has overcome these issues and demonstrated that SAP can handle complex military plans.
“We encountered problems. I am the first to admit that,” Klein said. Issues arose when data needed to be uploaded during system reboots after disconnections, which is a necessary feature for ships that sometimes “disappear” for days.
“Globally, there are different regulations and data privacy requirements. The issues we are solving are indeed very complex,” Klein said. “But this is also SAP’s competitive advantage.”
