March 16 News: The three major Hong Kong stock indices opened higher and continued to rise. At the close, the Hang Seng Index increased by 1.45%, closing at 25,834.02 points; the Hang Seng Tech Index rose by 2.69%; and the H-shares Index gained 1.69%. On the market, tech stocks mostly rose, with Xiaomi up over 5%, Meituan up over 3%, Bilibili, NetEase, and Tencent each up over 2%. Lithium battery stocks performed strongly, with CATL up over 7%. Most auto stocks rose, with BYD up over 7%. AI application stocks mostly increased, with Zhipu rising over 14%. Chip stocks led the gains, with GigaDevice rising over 18%. Gold stocks declined, with Chifeng Gold dropping over 6%.
Lithium battery stocks performed strongly, with CATL up over 7%. CATL previously announced that in 2025, the company will achieve operating revenue of 423.702 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 17.04%, and net profit of 72.201 billion yuan, a year-on-year increase of 42.28%. The company also disclosed a substantial dividend plan, with approximately 36.1 billion yuan in cash dividends to be paid out in 2025, accounting for 50% of the net profit attributable to shareholders that year.
Most auto stocks rose, with BYD up over 7%. On March 16, Li Ke, Vice President of BYD, announced at an event in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that BYD’s factory in Brazil has received export orders for a total of 100,000 vehicles from Argentina and Mexico. A report from CICC International suggests that, affected by seasonal fluctuations and prior consumption overdraft, the mainland auto market will perform steadily in the first quarter of 2026. As local policies to boost consumption accelerate and with the Beijing Auto Show and new car launches in April, market confidence is expected to gradually recover. Regarding exports, benefiting from positive progress in China-EU and China-Canada tariff negotiations and the deepening of domestic brands’ globalization strategies, China’s new energy vehicle exports are accelerating from “product going abroad” to “industry chain going abroad.”
AI application stocks mostly increased, with Zhipu rising over 14%. On the evening of March 15, Zhipu announced on its overseas official WeChat account the release of the Lobster Large Model GLM-5-Turbo. This is the world’s first general large model optimized in-depth for the Lobster OpenClaw scenario. Its performance in OpenClaw scenarios significantly surpasses GLM-5, leading in multiple key tasks compared to several mainstream models. Zhipu previously launched AutoClaw (Chinese name: AoLong), China’s first truly one-click install local version of OpenClaw.
Chip stocks led the gains, with GigaDevice rising over 18%. The semiconductor industry chain may see a new wave of price increases. Mature process wafer foundries such as UMC, World Advanced, and Powerchip are expected to raise prices starting as early as April, with increases of up to 10% or more. Notably, media reports today indicate that Huahong Semiconductor Group’s wafer foundry business, Huali Microelectronics, is advancing the 7nm chip process at its Shanghai plant, aiming to achieve an initial monthly capacity of several thousand 7nm chips by the end of this year, with further expansion planned.
Gold stocks declined, with Chifeng Gold dropping over 6%. COMEX gold prices fell below the $5,000 mark, attracting market attention. In fact, since the outbreak of the US-Iran conflict, gold’s performance as a traditional safe-haven asset has surprised the market. Since March, COMEX gold futures have fallen by over 5% cumulatively. Guoxin Futures analysis points out that on the macro level, rising crude oil prices have boosted inflation expectations, generally suppressing market expectations for the Federal Reserve to cut interest rates this year.
