Retest in trading: the key to the correct entry into a position
Retest is when the price returns to a level it has already broken through. It is one of the most reliable signals for opening a profitable trade. When the price rises above a significant mark and then pulls back, it indicates strong supply at that level. This supply will influence the price movement and continue to do so each time the price approaches it.
How Retest Works on Price Levels
Every level where a retest occurs contains important information. Whether you’re analyzing five-minute, hourly, or daily charts — this pattern works everywhere. Resistance and support levels act like magnets: they both attract and repel the price. There is no price pattern or figure that doesn’t include a retest element. This is a universal law confirmed across all timeframes.
Retest as a Magnet for Price
Significant zones create a powerful magnetic effect on price movements. When the price approaches such a zone, it either bounces off or breaks through and then returns. Understanding this mechanism will help you avoid rushing into the first breakout. Instead of impulsively opening a position immediately after a breakout, wait for the retest — this will give you a much better entry point. Each such level will operate on the same principles, regardless of the market or direction in which it develops.
Why Patience During Retest Pays Off
Learning to wait for a retest fosters one of the key qualities in a trader — patience. Instead of trading on every breakout, you’ll learn to wait for more favorable conditions to enter the market. This doesn’t mean that immediately opening a position on a breakout is a bad strategy; it also has its place. However, retests give you an additional advantage: the opportunity to enter at a better price with greater confidence in the move. Mastering this technique turns retest from just a price phenomenon into a powerful tool for risk management and increasing the likelihood of profitable trades.
