EU Says It Is Communicating with the US on Hormuz Strait Navigation Issues

EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Josep Borrell, said Monday that keeping the Strait of Hormuz open aligns with European interests, and EU member states will discuss what measures can be taken to restore navigation.

Before the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting in Brussels, Borrell told reporters, “Keeping the Strait of Hormuz open is in our interest, so we are also discussing what actions can be taken in this regard.”

He added, “From the European side, we have been in communication with the United States at various levels on this matter, but the current situation is clearly very turbulent.”

Borrell made these remarks as U.S. President Donald Trump was increasing pressure on allies, demanding the dispatch of ships to help ensure the security of the strait, and warning that if relevant countries do not provide support, NATO will face a “very bad” future.

Borrell stated that this matter is “not within NATO’s scope of action.”

He said, “There are no NATO troops stationed in the Strait of Hormuz.”
