UK Considers Sending Interceptor Drones to Counter Iranian Shahed UAVs
(MENAFN) Officials in the United Kingdom are reportedly evaluating a plan to deploy thousands of interceptor drones to the Middle East to counter Iranian-made Shahed drones, according to reports.
The proposed system, known as the “Octopus,” was originally developed and produced in Britain to support Ukraine in defending against Russian drone attacks. Reports indicate that the technology could be modified to help shield British forces and allied assets operating across the region.
Manufacturing of these interceptor drones has significantly increased, with production now reaching several thousand units each month.
A defense source cited in reports said the UK is examining how the experience and technological developments gained by Ukraine during its conflict with Russia could be used to counter threats posed by Iranian Shahed-style drones.
“Ukraine is clearly the first priority for this capability. But beyond that, the axis of aggression between Russia and Iran is clear. Shahed-style drones are a key part of both their arsenals,” the source said.
The discussion about potentially sending interceptor drones comes as the UK faces pressure from Donald Trump and some US military figures, who have criticized what they perceive as a restrained British response to the conflict involving Iran.
Trump has called on London to deploy naval vessels to the Strait of Hormuz as part of an international effort aimed at safeguarding vital oil shipping routes. British authorities have acknowledged they are reviewing the possibility of sending a ship to the area but have yet to announce a final decision.
“As this conflict continues, we should absolutely be looking at how we can bring in Ukrainian expertise and innovation,” said the source, adding that the move could benefit UK security and support for Ukraine.
