According to unnamed officials cited by relevant media, the Japanese government is considering deploying the Japan Self-Defense Forces to the Middle East to gather intelligence for the protection of ships and crew members.

The deployment will not include the Strait of Hormuz.

It is expected that this deployment will be similar to 2019, when the area around the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz was avoided.

One person said that Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi might tell U.S. President Donald Trump during a meeting on Thursday that Japan is considering deploying the Self-Defense Forces in some form.

Note: Japan’s Defense Minister stated there are no plans to send warships to the Strait of Hormuz.
