"Epic" Update: Microsoft Tests Custom User Folder Names in Windows 11 Initial Setup

IT Home, March 16 — When installing Windows 11, the system automatically generates the user folder name based on the Microsoft account email or profile name. Many users are dissatisfied with this mechanism because email addresses are often long or formatted unusually, which can cause the generated folder name to be truncated.

In practical use, this “feature” can be inconvenient, especially in command-line environments. Addressing this long-standing complaint, Microsoft announced on March 13, via its official blog, that a feature to customize the user folder name will be added soon.

According to IT Home, Windows 11 had attempted to offer a similar feature over five months ago, but the implementation was not ideal. Users had to manually rename the folder via Command Prompt, and many were unaware of how to open Command Prompt during the initial system setup.

This time, Microsoft provides a simpler method. During the initial Windows setup, when naming the computer, users can click “Show user folder name” and enter their desired user folder name, as long as it complies with Windows naming rules. The name can include letters, numbers, hyphens, and underscores.

Microsoft mentioned in the announcement: “After introducing improvements to Insider users last fall, users can now set the user folder name directly on the device name page during Windows installation. This update makes customization easier. If users skip this step, the system will continue to use the default name.”

Currently, this new feature is being tested in the latest preview versions of Windows 11 Dev Channel and Beta Channel.
