Report: Hong Kong plans to launch consultation on the definition of mainland insurance customers, allowing non-permanent residents of the mainland to purchase insurance without having to travel to Hong Kong in person.
According to reports from Hong Kong’s Ming Pao, citing the Hong Kong Insurance Authority’s Executive Director (Long-term Business) Lu Yuk-kuo, the Hong Kong Insurance Authority plans to redefine the category of “Mainland visitors” because current regulations require Mainland Chinese to be physically present in Hong Kong to purchase insurance. Under the new identity definition, the Insurance Authority plans to allow non-permanent residents of Mainland China to purchase insurance without being physically present in Hong Kong. This move is expected to help Hong Kong attract Mainland Chinese overseas, especially high-end clients. Formal consultations will begin next season, and guidelines on customer definitions and related regulations will be issued within this year.
