The 2026 National People’s Congress and Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference are approaching. On March 3rd, Tian Xuan, a National People’s Congress delegate and distinguished professor at Peking University, stated that currently, the daily trading hours of A-shares are the shortest among major global markets. There are issues such as insufficient integration with global markets, mismatch with market expansion, and increased costs and risks for small and medium investors. To promote A-shares’ adaptation to higher levels of opening-up, Tian Xuan suggested a phased approach to extend trading hours: First, gradually extend trading hours by delaying the afternoon closing time to 4:00 PM to synchronize with Hong Kong stocks, then extend the morning closing time to 12:00 PM to achieve 5.5 hours of daily trading; second, bring forward the morning opening time to 9:00 AM to align with major Asia-Pacific exchanges, increasing the duration to 6 hours, approaching the New York Stock Exchange level; third, strengthen digital support by improving intelligent risk control alerts by regulators and upgrading digital trading services by brokerages to hedge adjustment costs.
