(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed deep regret on Saturday over the collapse of diplomatic efforts following US and Israeli strikes against Iran.

Speaking at an emergency UN Security Council meeting, Guterres emphasized the need to respect international law and humanitarian norms, warning that military action in the region could trigger uncontrollable events. He stressed that lasting peace depends on “genuine dialogue and negotiations” rather than force.

Referring to the latest US-Iran nuclear talks in Geneva, held under Omani mediation, Guterres said the opportunity for diplomacy had been “squandered.” He warned that failure to return to negotiations risks wider conflict with serious consequences for civilians and regional stability.
