East Coast Electricity Bills: Why Connecticut Residents Are Paying 48% More Than Average

Living on the East Coast? Your power bill might be crushing your wallet harder than you think. New data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows the median monthly electricity bill across 16 East Coast states sits at $142 — but the regional gaps are wild.

The Cost Spread:

  • Connecticut leads the pain train at $202.74/month (48% above national average)
  • Florida and New Hampshire follow closely at $168+ monthly
  • New Jersey and Vermont are the outliers — coming in 17% and 14% below national average

State-by-State Breakdown:

  • Most expensive: Connecticut ($202.74), Florida ($168.35), New Hampshire ($168.79)
  • Most affordable: New Jersey ($113.21), Vermont ($117.11), New York ($125.80)
  • Middle ground: Georgia ($141.67), Virginia ($141.63), Pennsylvania ($143.10)

Interestingly, consumption doesn’t always correlate with cost. Florida uses way more power (1,107 kWh/month) but New Jersey’s lower rates keep bills down despite moderate consumption. The real culprit? State energy grids, fuel mix, and regulatory differences.

If you’re stuck in a high-cost state, those power bills are quietly bleeding $500-700+ annually compared to Jersey or Vermont residents. Worth shopping around for energy providers if your state allows deregulation.
