# $22M NFT Scam: DOJ Arrests Founders
The prosecutor has just taken action against two Californians who took $22 million in one of the largest NFT scams known. Gabriel Hay and Gavin Mayo set up a complete circus between 2021 and 2024: fake projects, fake promises, and when investors put in the money, they disappeared.
The play: they published fantasy roadmaps, pretended to be legitimate teams, and once they raised funds, the projects vanished like smoke. Investors were left with empty pockets.
The interesting thing is that the Department of Justice is pulling old cases from 2021 out of the drawer to prosecute them now. Clear message: even after years, crypto scammers will pay. Federal law is not in a hurry, but it has a memory.
These raids are the medicine the market needed. Every time a scammer falls, the industry gets a little cleaner.
